Hi Peter,

I have checked the specifics for this with the US software team,
unfortunately they are not able to explain the full information as to
how this works as they are not willing to reveal the proprietary methods
used.

However, I have been informed that it uses a coded logic which
determines the difference between a normal takeoff/landing at an airport
versus a projected impact or reduced terrain clearance with a spot on
the ground away from an airport.
